R. L. "Stoney" Burk

Stoney Burk, “Stoney,” is a multi-generation Montanan. He was raised near Eureka in a small rural area called Trego. He attended WesternStoney Burk Montana College in Dillon, Montana, on a football and academic scholarship. He graduated in 1964 and taught school for one year at Twin Bridges, Montana.

Stoney entered the U.S. Air Force in 1966, ultimately becoming an instructor pilot and academic instructor in the F4 Phantom Jet. He was the Outstanding Graduate from F4 Phantom Instructor Training Class. He had two tours in Vietnam where he flew 252 combat missions over North and South Vietnam and was awarded numerous combat medals including the Distinguished Flying Cross.

In 1975, he resigned his commission and moved back to Montana. After a couple years working in the insurance industry and other endeavors, he applied for law school at the University of Montana, which he entered in 1979. Stoney paid his way through law school by felling timber and by working several part-time jobs.

He graduated in 1982 and began work with the firm of Murphy and Curtis in Choteau, Montana where he became a partner in 1984. Eventually the firm became Burk Law Office. Stoney is now practicing of counsel with the firm of Burk, Lee and Bieler, PLLC.

Stoney and his wife, Jeannie, live on the Teton River near Choteau. He is a writer, photographer, hunter, outdoorsman, artist, craftsman, and is active in the local art club. His law practice includes real estate, estate and probate matters, and a multitude of general practice issues. His biggest goal in the last decade or so has been to fight for the protection of the Rocky Mountain Front and a few of the other last remaining wild places. Stoney and Jeannie have been married for 40-plus years, and they have four adult children, two daughters and two sons.
